Music Curriculum Overview

North Hanover Township School District

Overview of K-6 Music Curriculum

Philosophy:

It is our belief that every child has music aptitude and that each child should be given the opportunity early in life to experience music in various ways. This experience, not only better develops their music aptitude, but provides a strong foundation for lifelong enrichment.  It is our hope that we will be able to motivate each child so that music continues to remain an integral part of his or her life beyond the classroom walls.

Music Department Vision:

The North Hanover Music Department vision is to encourage and inspire students to seek and deeply appreciate different music experiences throughout their life.  Our goal is to first provide a solid and positive foundation of music experiences and knowledge for all students by stressing the fundamentals and aesthetic values of music. Classroom activities are designed to foster creativity, collaboration, and communication skills as well as develop independent and critical thinking skills within the learner. The music programs are designed to increase feelings of accomplishment and self-esteem in students through the acquisition of skills necessary to perform, create, and evaluate music on both on a personal level and as part of a large organization.

Our department and district are dedicated to providing students with additional performance opportunities, both vocally and instrumentally, to extend general classroom learning and enrich our students’ educational experiences.

The vocal and instrumental facets of the total music program offer a wide variety of hands-on experiences to enrich the learners’ educational experience through additional performance opportunities.

At every grade level, the general goal of the music program is to develop each student’s independent music making skills through a hands-on class situation or performance ensemble experience.

The North Hanover Music Curriculum is based on the National Coalition for Core Arts Standards and the New Jersey Core Curriculum Content Standards for Visual and Performing Arts: NCCAS, NJSLS Music Specific Standards: Creating (1.1, 2.1, 3.1, 3.2) Performing (4.1, 4.2, 4.3, 5.1, 6.1) Responding (7.1, 7.2, 8.1) Connecting (10, 11)
