School Reopening

Updates and information regarding the district reopening plan will be posted in this section of the website.

August 3, 2020

Dear Parents/Guardians:

Over the past 6 weeks, a team of administrators, teachers, parents, Board members, community representatives, nurses, support staff and others has been meeting as a Steering Committee and area-specific work groups to strategically plan for students to return for the 2020-2021 school year.  The health and wellness of our students, faculty and staff has been the primary filter through which all possibilities have been run.

Although the process is ongoing and subject to amendment as more information and guidelines become available, right now we believe we will be able to offer our families two options for their children. The first is an all virtual option and the second is an in-person option. At this time, we need to ask you to log in to the Genesis Parent Portal  to make your selection for each of your children. Selections are due no later than August 8, 2020. This selection will be effective until the end of the first Trimester, which ends just prior to Winter Break. If at any time the data about COVID in our community changes, or we receive guidance from State or public health officials advising we do so, the district may have to shift to a virtual only schedule. Please keep this in mind while planning.

  • The all virtual option will be  supported by a virtual curriculum that is aligned to our districts standards and scope and sequence, and is powered by a learning management system that is easy to use. The teaching will be done by specially trained North Hanover teachers. There will be daily teacher instruction.

  • The schedule of the in person option is dependent on the number of families who choose the virtual option. If enough families choose virtual, we will have enough staff and spaces to bring all of our students in 5 days a week. If we have fewer than we need, we will shift to a hybrid model.

  • PreK, Kindergarten and some special education students will attend 5 days a week, even if the rest of the district is on a hybrid schedule. These students may also opt for the full virtual model instead.

Because any in person program will feature physically distanced classrooms, first we need to know how many students will attend in person instruction to identify the number of classrooms we need. If the number exceeds the available carrying capacity of classrooms, and the in person model is not able to be five days a week, then it will be two days a week. Students will be assigned to cohort A or B. Cohort A would attend Monday-Tuesday and cohort B Thursday-Friday. The same virtual curriculum described above would be implemented on all days students are not in the school building .

The planning teams have worked very hard to get us to this point, identifying protocols to protect student and staff wellness while they are in school. We are grateful to be a part of such a community that pulls together to find the best possible solutions for our children. More details about those protocols can be found in the attached presentation.

All sessions are open to all, but in order to focus the conversation we have suggested school specific dates and times. The overall plan is the same district wide, but there are some building specific details that are different.

We have added a new section to our district website where we will post all school re-opening related information.

Our goal is to provide your children with the best we possibly can under any circumstances we face this year. I know that it all will inevitably look and feel different than what any of us wants for our children, but I am confident that with partnership, patience and perseverance,  we will come out stronger than before.
