Ocean County School Administrator Named Superintendent of North Hanover Township School District

Wrightstown, N.J.--Michael B. Maschi, Ed.D., has been named superintendent of the North Hanover Township School District. Dr. Maschi, who spent the past seven years as assistant superintendent of the Ocean County Vocational Technical School in Toms River, N.J., will take over leadership of the district on December 22, 2025.

“Dr. Maschi has a proven track record of educational leadership, and we welcome his experience and expertise to lead North Hanover Township School District moving forward,” said Board of Education President Bryan Reading. “We reviewed a very strong pool of candidates and Dr. Maschi’s qualifications and leadership philosophy rose to the top.”

The North Hanover Township School District serves about 1,440 students at three schools – C.B. Lamb Elementary (pre-kindergarten through third grade), Endeavour Elementary (pre-kindergarten through fourth grade) and Upper Elementary (fourth through sixth grades). In addition to North Hanover Township, the district serves part of Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst. More than half of the district’s students are children of active-duty military personnel.

James Sarruda, Ed.D., retired superintendent of the Northern Burlington County Regional School District, has served as interim superintendent of the district since July.

“I am looking forward to working with the faculty, staff, parents and the community to fulfill the district’s mission to create and uphold high levels of learning for all students. I share the same commitment to ensure that all students are resilient, lifelong learners who achieve excellence and engage as 21st century citizens,” Dr. Maschi said.

While at Ocean County Vocational Technical School (OCVTS), Dr. Maschi helped secure millions of dollars in county investment to expand career and technical education offerings across Ocean County, creating new opportunities for students to pursue high-demand career pathways and workforce credentials. He is recognized as a student-first educational leader, bringing an authentic, purpose-driven, and outcomes-oriented philosophy with him to North Hanover.

A significant part of Dr. Maschi’s career has been dedicated to preschool through eighth grade education, providing experiences that continue to shape his approach as a student-first educational leader. He served as director of special services in Lacey Township, supervisor of special services in Little Silver, and as a school social worker and child study team member in Barnegat Township. He developed expertise in intervention and referral services and pre-intervention strategies, helping schools identify and address student needs early. He also delivered extensive professional development for elementary teachers, equipping them with practical strategies to maximize student growth, foster resilience, and promote inclusive learning environments.

Dr. Maschi’s connection to military families and Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst spans many years. OCVTS once operated a high school and evening trade programs on the base, and he has been involved with base operations through the Military Support Alliance, the State of the Base program, and the Honorary Commander program. Additionally, from 2004 to 2012, he worked as a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and psychotherapist, utilizing a large Veterans Affairs grant program serving active-duty military members, their spouses and children. This experience and his early work in mental health and substance abuse treatment gives him a deep understanding of how children and families grow, adapt and thrive.

Dr. Maschi received undergraduate degrees in psychology and sociology from the State University of New York (SUNY) at New Paltz. He earned a master’s degree in sociology at SUNY at New Paltz and a master’s in social work from SUNY at Albany. In 2016, he earned his doctorate in educational leadership from the University of New England.

A graduate of the Foundation for Educational Administration's Expedited Certification for Educational Leadership (EXCEL) program in 2012, Dr. Maschi maintains the New Jersey Department of Education standard principal and school administrator leadership certificates.
Dr. Maschi is married to his wife, Kimberly, and is the proud father of Gianna, Alexa, Olivia and Ryan.
